What to Ask an Activewear Manufacturer on a Factory Tour

During a factory tour, you may see rows of machines, fabric moving and people at sewing stations. That is useful context. But it does not tell you how your order will be handled. If you are comparing activewear manufacturers, ask about the handoffs as well as the equipment: how does an agreed decision reach the person doing the next operation?

Below are three questions that are fair to ask any supplier, and a short brief you can copy into an email before your next visit or call.

HF Garments: a busy factory is the starting point. Three questions for your next supplier conversation.

A Busy Factory Video Shows Activity, Not Your Order

A busy floor shows visible production activity. It does not establish whether the factory has the right experience, available capacity or agreed instructions for your particular order. Those questions need a separate conversation about your product and project.

None of this makes a video worthless. It is a starting point. Treat it as a prompt for questions rather than a conclusion.

Three Questions Worth Asking

These are recommended buyer checks, not a claim about how any specific supplier runs its floor. Ask them and listen to how the answer is given. A specific, named process is more useful than a general assurance.

1. Who Confirms the Sample Before Cutting?

Sample approval is a handoff. Someone has to confirm the approved sample, and the cutting team has to know that confirmation happened. Ask who owns that step and what the production floor receives as proof. If the answer is “the sample is approved and then we cut”, ask for the next level of detail: who signs off, and where that sign-off is recorded.

2. How Are Changes Communicated to the Production Team?

Changes are normal. A measurement adjustment, a fabric substitution, a revised trim — these happen. The risk is not the change; it is a change that reaches one person and not the line. Ask how a revision travels from your contact to the people cutting and sewing. A supplier who can describe the route, including who is told and when, is giving you something you can test on your next order.

3. Who Contacts You Before Work Continues?

Ask what happens when a measurement, material or instruction needs clarification. Who decides whether the affected work should pause? Who contacts the buyer, and how is the decision recorded? Agree on that route before bulk activewear production rather than assuming your contact will hear about every open question automatically.

Ask for One Style’s Journey, Not a Row of Machines

Instead of only asking “show me the factory”, ask “walk me through one comparable style”. Ask how it moves from approved sample to cutting, sewing, finishing and packing, including who receives each instruction. A sportswear manufacturer should have an opportunity to explain this using a non-confidential example. A general equipment video does not answer the same question.

Our short video introduces this distinction with a presenter holding leopard-print pants and footage of the production floor. These scenes are context for the questions, not evidence that the garment shown is the order being produced or that any specific approval procedure has been verified. Use the video to start a more useful discussion about your own style.

One caution: a good walkthrough is still a description. It does not prove delivery reliability, quality consistency or ethical compliance. Those need order history, audit documents and references, and you should ask for them separately, with respect for other buyers’ confidentiality. Do not ask a supplier to share another customer’s tech pack or order records. Ask what they can share that is theirs to share.

It is also worth saying that using an intermediary is not automatically a problem. Some agents add real coordination value. The question is the same either way: can the person in front of you explain the handoffs, or only the showroom?

A Copyable Inquiry Brief

If you want to ask these questions in writing, this short brief works:

  • Product reference: the style or closest reference, plus your current development stage.
  • Sample confirmation: who approves the sample before cutting, and what reference the floor receives.
  • Change route: how a revision reaches cutting and sewing, and who is informed.
  • Clarification: who contacts you about an unresolved point before affected work continues.
  • Walkthrough: how one comparable style moves through production, without confidential client records.

You do not need a full tech pack to start this conversation. A product reference, an estimated quantity and your current development question are enough to get a useful reply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a factory tour enough to choose a supplier?

No. A tour shows that production exists and gives you a feel for the floor. Choosing a supplier also needs sample performance, order history, references and documents you can check. Treat the tour as one input.

What if the supplier cannot answer these questions clearly?

That is useful information. It may mean the process is informal, or that your contact does not work close to production. Ask for a written description and see whether it is consistent. Then decide whether the gap is acceptable for your order.

Should I ask for another buyer’s order records?

No. Other buyers’ tech packs and order history are confidential. Ask what the supplier can share that is their own, such as process descriptions, audit documents or references they are permitted to give.
