Fabric GSM Inspection Before Bulk Activewear Production: Why We Rejected a 310–315 GSM Delivery

A fabric roll can look close to an approved sample and still fail a production requirement.

In a recent incoming-fabric inspection at HF Garments, the approved sample reference was 300 GSM. Fabric supplied for the next production stage was sampled from multiple rolls and locations. After the samples rested for 24 hours, the readings were between 310 and 315 GSM.

That is approximately 3.3% to 5% heavier than the confirmed 300 GSM reference. We rejected the material and required the supplier to replace it until the fabric meets the agreed requirement.

This was not a decision based on appearance alone. It was a decision to protect the approved product standard before cutting and bulk production began.

Why Fabric GSM Matters in Activewear Manufacturing

GSM means grams per square metre. It describes fabric weight, but buyers should not treat it as a complete definition of quality. Composition, construction, finish, stretch, recovery, color and other approved requirements still matter.

However, when 300 GSM has been confirmed during sampling, receiving 310–315 GSM fabric creates a real sample-to-bulk consistency question. A weight change can affect:

  • the hand feel and perceived heaviness of the garment;
  • stretch, recovery and movement during wear;
  • how the fabric behaves during cutting and sewing;
  • finished-garment weight and packing calculations;
  • fabric consumption, costing and repeat-order consistency.

The specific impact depends on the fabric construction and product. The important point is that a factory should not silently replace the approved material standard with a different result.

What Our Incoming Fabric Check Found

The confirmed reference for this case was 300 GSM. When fabric from a new supplier arrived, we did not rely on one convenient surface reading.

Samples were taken from different incoming rolls and locations, including material reached after opening into the roll rather than only the exposed edge. The samples were then allowed to rest for 24 hours before the weight was checked again.

The resulting range was 310–315 GSM. Because it did not match the confirmed 300 GSM requirement for this project, the material was not released to the next production stage.

Why We Returned the Fabric Instead of “Using It Anyway”

Using a heavier fabric may appear to save time in the short term. In reality, it transfers an unresolved material change into cutting, sewing, fitting and final delivery.

Once bulk production begins, the cost of correction becomes much larger. Cut panels cannot simply be returned as full fabric rolls, and garments made from the wrong material may no longer match the approved sample.

Rejecting the fabric at incoming inspection keeps the decision at the correct stage: before irreversible production work begins.

A Buyer Checklist for Fabric GSM Approval

Before bulk activewear fabric is released for cutting, buyers should ask the manufacturer to confirm:

  1. The approved reference: Which sample, swatch or specification confirms the required GSM?
  2. The actual production material: Is the check performed on incoming bulk fabric rather than only a development swatch?
  3. Sampling coverage: Are multiple rolls or locations checked so one reading does not represent the whole delivery?
  4. Condition before comparison: Was the material allowed to settle under the factory’s defined inspection procedure before the final decision?
  5. Recorded result: Are the measured values connected to the material lot and approval requirement?
  6. Disposition: Who can release, hold, return or replace material when the result does not match?

GSM inspection should be part of a wider material check. Buyers may also need confirmed composition, color, usable width, stretch and recovery, surface appearance and other product-specific properties.

Incoming Inspection Protects Sample-to-Bulk Consistency

An approved sample is useful only when its confirmed requirements continue into production material. Incoming inspection creates a gate between supplier delivery and factory use.

HF’s response in this case was simple: do not cut first and debate the difference later. Hold the material, record the mismatch and return it until the agreed fabric requirement is supplied.

This is one part of the broader sample-to-bulk quality handover. It also protects the later production path from cutting through shipment.
