How Activewear Brands Develop a 220 GSM Cotton-Spandex Fabric From Concept to Bulk Production

Building a new activewear line starts with the fabric. Not the sketch, not the label, not the packaging — the fabric.

For brands that want a cotton-rich hand feel with enough stretch for movement, a 220 GSM, 95% cotton, 5% spandex fabric in light ivory is a development worth studying. This article walks through what this fabric means, how brands validate it, and what the development-to-production pipeline looks like before the first bulk order.

Product Positioning: Where Does 220 GSM Cotton-Spandex Fit?

Not every activewear fabric belongs in every garment. 220 GSM (grams per square meter) places this fabric in the mid-weight category — heavier than lightweight jersey but lighter than fleece or sweatshirt fabric.

This fabric suits structured activewear, leisurewear and athleisure tops, and low-to-moderate intensity garments such as yoga tops, training jackets, and layering pieces. It is not positioned for high-compression performancewear or moisture-wicking applications.

Fabric Composition: 95% Cotton + 5% Spandex

Cotton (95%) provides softness, breathability, natural hand feel, and dye absorption. Spandex (5%) provides stretch, shape recovery, and movement comfort.

Cotton-rich blends appeal to brands targeting customers who prefer natural fiber comfort over synthetic performance. A small percentage of spandex adds stretch without compromising the cotton feel. Five percent is a standard ratio that provides comfortable two-way stretch while allowing the fabric to return to shape after movement.

Fabric Weight: What 220 GSM Actually Means

GSM (grams per square meter) measures fabric density. 220 GSM sits in the mid-weight band (180–240). For activewear this means the fabric holds its shape when cut and sewn, provides good coverage in light colors, and suits transitional seasons and climate-controlled environments.

Stretch and Recovery Considerations

Stretch is how much the fabric can extend when pulled. Recovery is how well it returns to shape. For a 95% cotton, 5% spandex blend, the fabric offers comfortable two-way stretch. Recovery is adequate for moderate use but may not match synthetic-dominant blends. Stretch behavior should be tested in the intended garment construction.

Color Selection: Light Ivory

Light ivory creates a clean, premium aesthetic. However, light colors require careful evaluation of seam opacity, lining visibility, and staining resistance. Color consistency across dye lots must be confirmed before bulk production. Fabric close-up images and the color card are available for review.

Sample Development Process

Current status: The garment sample is still in development.

Stage 1 — Fabric Selection and Confirmation: The fabric has been confirmed. Stage 2 — Color Card Approval: Completed. Stage 3 — Garment Sample Development (Current Stage): The sample is being made to evaluate fit, seam construction, and stretch. Stage 4 — Buyer Review: The brand reviews the sample before bulk production.

Bulk Production Preparation

MOQ: 100 pieces per color and per size. Sample lead time: Approximately 7 days. Bulk production lead time: Approximately 30–40 days (reference timelines, subject to design, fabric, quantity and order confirmation).

RFQ Information Required

To obtain a quotation, provide: product type, target quantity per color and per size, fabric specifications, customization requirements (labels, packaging, logo), target market, sample timeline, and bulk delivery expectation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is 220 GSM cotton-spandex suitable for high-intensity workout wear? A: No. This fabric is designed for structured activewear and athleisure. For high-intensity workouts requiring moisture management, synthetic-dominant fabrics are more appropriate.

Q: What is the MOQ? A: 100 pieces per color and per size.

Q: Does this fabric have moisture-wicking properties? A: No. This is 95% cotton. Cotton absorbs moisture rather than wicking it away. The fabric has not been tested or certified for moisture-wicking performance.

Q: How do I start a project? A: Contact us with your product type, target quantity, and any existing specifications.
